National Geographic:

Acrobat and Mountain Guide Lukas Mathis on the top of Fiamma, a peak in the eastern part of the alps. After several fails Lukas could hold his handstand and i was able to catch this breathtaking moment.

I can only imagine what the wind conditions may have been like as added challenge.

All gymnasts want to grow tall!

5-9-2015

A favorite spotting technique: Encouraging the gymnast to grow tall by pushing her toes up to the ceiling, against your hand. If she doesn't push tall, she doesn't feel the pressure of your hand spotting her.

As demonstrated by California Sports Center's Christopher Brown:

Spotting Handstand Walks for Beginning Team

Wheel barrel walks with emphasis on maintaining shape is great conditioning.

I generally prefer not to have team kids do handstand walks if they can't hold solid handstands; or shoulder/thigh touch with good weight transferring against a wall, while maintaining shape. Still, handstand-walking once in a while is good fun and shoulder-strengthening for the kids.

One problem for strength benefits of course, is that beginners can't stay up for very long because of lack of experience in maintaining balance.

When I do offer a spot, a great method to consider is to have the gymnast squeeze your hand/forearm. That way you're not just holding them up- they are still supporting their own body weight. You're only aiding their balance; and they only get the spot if they are squeezing my arm with their legs. Once they relax the adductors and let go of my arm, they lose the spot-assist.

Lvl4 vault rotation HS idle station

At GW, the boys pommel horse area is right by the end of the vault runway.  So I sometimes take advantage of the equipment for side stations.

Finding straight:

Can never get in enough handstand practice.

Standing right-side up

October 3, 2014

Swing Big! has a tip this morning on handstand training, while right-side up.

Here are some alignment spot-checking I did with our new level 3s earlier this month:

Piked handstand one-arm weight transfer drill/exercise

5-17-2014

Why not against a wall in an actual handstand?  There is no viable wall space by the bars area.  So drills are built and adapted to what we have at our disposal.

The inclined boards are primarily used for beginner leg ups; but I also like them for handstanding, handstand push-ups, and planching drills- similar to using walls or blocks to put the feet against or on top of.

Plus, this kid is only a level 3/4 and the piked handstand is good for maintaining upper body alignment and reducing some of the weight-load, until she gets stronger.

Hot Shot Handstand Contest

I use a 3 pt system- Last "man" standing (disqualified if you fall over), quality of the handstand, no wobbles on the lunge.
