Sprinting can be substituted as well with things like crab walks. 

Rules laid out by Thomas Bauer:

1) Players put the shirts on the floor, they NEYER throw it

2) Players NEVER touch the playing field (danger of slipping and injury)
3) Next teammate waits behind a starting line and starts his run when he gets touched by returning teammate
4) If all the shirts are placed on the field, the teams play on by replacing THEIR OWN shirts until one team has three in a row
